about

a- without, -topos place (topography, etc.)

ATOPOS was established in 2023 by Yvette Ofa Agapow in Magandjin (or so-called 'brisbane, australia'). It operates on two levels: as a label and as a collective heading for certain musical/social actions.

The label focusses on the release and promotion of experimental, other, noise, diy, alternative, weirdo music & sound parimarily from artists practicing in Magandjin but also sometimes elsewhere. It is the aim of the label to disseminate experimental/other music cheaply and widely - art is better shared and enjoyed together. If you just wanna listen to the releases or buy/stream with no frills click here to go to the ATOPOS bandcamp page. More information, links etc. are available in the Releases section of this website and will continue to be updated over time.

Most of the photo and video documentation you see here is the work of Marek Rygielski/Blend42, prolific documenter of experimental/alternative art and music in Magandjin and surrounds. You can see his live music documentation here, his photos here and listen to his music here. Some of the photos of bands in the releases section and photos from ATOPOS events 21st October 2023 and onward are by Dorah Daud, also avid photographer of local music and art. You can find her work here.

ATOPOS also functions as an outdoor performance/action series with the aim of re-orienting public space through sharing diy/experimental music in locations at odds with where performance/music/art is commonly presented. On colonially-occupied lands, it can be observed that 'public spaces' are actually highly regulated and policed by not only the law but also by the indoctrinating values of capitalists. You don't need to be told - you are raised to understand that the streets are not actually for use or enjoyment by the people but are instead transitional spaces to only be traversed for making money or land occupied by 'businesses' which also have strict laws regarding the use of 'their' space imposed on them that they then abide by. Draconian decibel-limit laws, pearl-clutching conservatives, pig landlords and capitalistic venue-owners continue to decimate art and culture in this city (and probably around the continent) that even suggests a lack of concern for profit, marketability, or generally-lauded artistic practices. Choose to stand up against the tyranny of polite/uncritical society that keeps us shackled and sever your ties to the media-machines, aesthetics, behaviours, and values of a world that does not care if you live or die - that does not care if you live your life as a slave to sensation, brain on autopilot.

ATOPOS acknowledges that it operates on the occupied lands of the Indigenous Jagera and Turrbal Peoples - these lands were never ceded and in fact were stolen from them by the brutal, malignant occupation of the 'Austr-alien' government. We tread lightly on country and believe in respecting for, caring for and learning about these lands on which we are able to commune and make art on that Indigenous people have also communed on and made art on for tens and thousands of years prior to now.
